Dollar Shave Club Review – 4X

My review of the Dollar Shave Club 4X is here to help you decide if you will benefit from buying this razor. I’ll spoil it for you – it’s awesome.

What most of us want out of a shave is to get it done and move on with life. Shaving is that “I have to do this again” job that most of us are glad can be quick and painless. But how often is that the case? With the cost of ‘mainstream’ national brand razors being unnecessarily high many of us just keep slugging away with that weeks or months old razor. But now we have choices! There is Harry’s, Dorco and Dollar Shave Club just to name a few. There are now enough of these mail order shaving systems that the big boys have started to offer the same thing at reduced prices. But they might be too late to lure back those of us who have defected to the young whippersnappers in the game who do it just the same, or better, faster and cheaper.

The Dollar Shave Club 4X Reviewed

That is exactly what Dollar Shave Club has done for me. I can have them automatically ship razors to me on my schedule, get a great shave, and only spend a few bucks a month. Score! I’ve settled down with my new best shave razor, the Dollar Shave Club 4X. Why is it my best shave razor instead of The Executive? Because I can easily get the shave I need for $3/mo less.

So what do you get for your $6 per month? You get a handle with your first shipment, along with 4 blades per month. Need more blades? Change your shipping options. Need fewer blades? Change your shipping options. You have no obligation and can change quantities or upgrade/downgrade to the other razors at any time.

I had used Gillette for many, many years before I gave Harry’s a try and I was glad for the savings. But honestly, it wasn’t perfect. After a year I decided to see what Dollar Shave Club was all about. I started with the Humble Twin and while it was nice and inexpensive, I did miss having a 4 or more blade system. I right away upgraded to the 4X and found just what I needed.

The 4X razor is great! The handle is a hefty metal body with copious amounts of knobby rubber on the outside. There is little chance you’ll lose your grip on this thing.

The razor head has a lot of space between each blade so that it should not clog up, and the head rotates smoothly and easily for adjusting to the manly contours of your face. (Or your lady’s legs. Yup, at the low price these things are you should get a set for that pretty partner of yours.)

The actual shave with this razor is excellent. The four blades work as expected to gently and cleanly slice away your shadows. This is made possible by the ribs on the rubber hair lifter on the leading edge of the razor head. After the work has been done the orange strip of soothing glides by, leaving your face smooth and fresh. Another great shave, and no nicks.

Dollar Shave Club 4X vs Harry’s

So how does the Dollar Shave Club 4X compare to Harry’s? The comparison is revealing.

Dollar Shave Club Review 4X VS Harry's

Left: 4X. Right: Harry’s.

The first thing to note is that Harry’s has a longer handle. I don’t think it makes much difference but it does have an impact on your perception of the blade angle. The reason is that the Harry’s blade-to-handle angle is very shallow, so the longer handle tends to add to the ‘shallowness’ impression. The 4X literally has a lot more room between the handle and your face so that you can focus on where the razor head is at instead of your fingers getting in the way.

Harry’s (top) vs Dollar Shave Club 4x (bottom) blade-to-handle angle.

The Dollar Shave Club and Harry’s shave heads are not similar at all. Harry’s is larger and ‘flatter’ but has a wider footprint. You’ll find it very difficult to get under your nose with Harry’s. Particularly due to the hair lifter being longer and generally in the way. The 4X isn’t a perfect fit under the nose, but it sure does allow me to get the job done. It’s a rare occasion that I notice I’ve not done a good job there.

Don’t get me wrong, Harry’s will get you a shave for a lot less money than Gillette or others, but the Dollar Shave Club 4X is even better.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a great shave, for a low price then I strongly recommend the Dollar Shave Club 4X. You’ll always have sharp blades because they ship to you monthly without you having to remember. You’ll get a close shave every time with no fuss. The handle is great to hold and big enough that you won’t feel like it’ll slip out of your fingers.
